The "New" Pioneer Gambling Hall and Hotel in Laughlin

I decided to do an overnighter over the weekend and the Pioneer had the best rate at $50. Having heard that it was a "new" Pioneer, it seemed like a good time to check it out.

It took 5 hours of driving through the beautiful Mojave Desert to get there, not including a quick stop at Avi Casino, and prior to checking in, I made a quick losing visit to the Golden Nugget.

I managed to check in early at my hotel and made my way to the room. Once inside, I discovered that no such renovation had happened to my room. The first thing I noticed was just how insecure my room was with the deadbolt not making contact with the door frame which basically had been rubbed away from years of use. There was no real privacy as the drapes wouldn't close all the way, something I fixed by jamming my computer bag over the drape edges.

It just looked like the room hadn't been redone in several decades. But the shower worked, even if the sink drained slow, I gave the bathroom a solid C. The bed actually slept well and with the really loud AC window unit, I didn't hear any noise.

The good thing was that the hotel restaurant still had the huge meals, I had the mashed potato burger which got its name from the big fried mash potato patty which seemed almost as big as the meat patty. The taste was great but the huge size of the burger made it hard to bite into it without forced the contents of the burger out the backside. It had to be at least 4-5 inches high. 
As you can see above, this was a real gut buster!

What really disappointed me was that they no longer served PULLED PORK PANCAKES during dinner hours, only for breakfast. Check it out. You get about 4 pancakes with pulled pork between each layer and on top, along with a Jack Daniels infused syrup to pour over the gigantic sized stack.
I  mean this is some real eating!

Anyway I ended up visiting about 6 different casinos and walked away down about $135, not too bad. Unfortunately my girl, Cleopatra 2, showed her bitchy side at the Aquarius Casino and the next morning ended up in a downward slide to bankruptcy.

So I left Laughlin and enjoyed the wonderful drive back home to socal.

The greatest friend of the California deserts has died

 Senator Diane Feinstein has died at the ripe old age of 90. There will be tributes from folks more eloquent and knowledgable than this old guy. But I would like to share with you my favorite Feinstein moment. Back in 2015, Senator Feinstein held a public, under the tent, meeting for comments regarding the three proposed national monuments; Castle Mountains, Mojave Trails and Sand to Snow. There was some controversy and one of the reasons for this meeting may have been to defuse some of it. What I mainly remember was the masterful way in which she ran the meeting and how the stakeholders all got a fair chance to speak. We all know what ended up happening. All three monuments were created and millions of acres have been protected. They sure won't be putting up any solar fields or windfarms in those acres. Great South Carolina BBQ out in Ludlow

 This morning when I left Buffalo Bill's Casino and Hotel out at Primm, Nevada, it just seemed a real good day to take the long way through the Mojave National Preserve. The route took me through the Ivsnpah Valley and down to Kelso Depot, then over through the little town of Amboy and points west on Old Route 66. When I got to Ludlow, I saw this man working his magic on a BBQ grill. We talked for a few minutes while he made me a pork meat sandwich with a little heat🤠 Here is a sandwich photo after a small bite😉 It was a fantastic bbq sandwich, actually cleared my sinuses a bit. He was setup to the side of the I 40 west onramp, lots of room for hungry truckers and buses to stop! We talked about people living out on public land and he mentioned that he lives on his own land, totally offgrid. Really cool.
